Product Categories
Verify that categories can be created with hierarchy (parent-child), and products can be assigned to multiple categories.
Preconditions
- You have permission to manage categories and products
Test Data
Parent category: "Clothing", Child category: "T-Shirts", Product assigned to both "Clothing" and "T-Shirts"Test Steps
Follow each step carefully
Navigate to Categories section
Usually under Products > Categories or separate Categories menu
Categories list/management page appears
Create a parent category with name, slug, and description
"Add Category" button, fill in Name: "Clothing"
Category form shows fields for name, slug (auto-generated), description
Save the parent category
"Clothing" category appears in the list
Create a child category under the parent
"Add Category" button, Name: "T-Shirts", Parent: select "Clothing" from dropdown
Parent dropdown shows "Clothing" as an option
Set the parent category to "Clothing"
Parent category dropdown or selector
"T-Shirts" shows as child of "Clothing" (may be indented in list)
Save the child category
"T-Shirts" category appears in list, showing hierarchy relationship to "Clothing"
Navigate to Products and edit a product
Product edit form opens
Assign the product to multiple categories (both "Clothing" and "T-Shirts")
Multi-select dropdown or checkboxes for categories
Both categories are selected/shown
Products can belong to multiple categories for better discoverability
Save the product
Success message appears
Visit storefront and verify category filtering
Navigate to category pages on storefront
Product appears when browsing "Clothing" AND when browsing "T-Shirts" categories
Expected Result
After setup: (1) Parent-child category hierarchy is established, (2) Categories show proper nesting in admin, (3) Product appears in all assigned categories on storefront, (4) Category navigation on storefront shows hierarchy, (5) Category filtering works correctly.
